Autumn Leaves -- a drabble inspired by this song:
leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold....
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sunburned hands, I used to hold.
Since you went away, the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song.
But I miss you most of all my darling,
When autumn leaves start to fall.
He doesn't remember seeing the leaves fall last year. Of course, they must have fallen. Not before. After.
After the night Casey killed Marybeth, saving them all -- though he wouldn't save himself. After the police and FBI came.
Maybe during the trial? No, he can remember staring out the window while the prosecutor babbled about Casey's suicide, calling it a confession. Zeke watched the bright new green leaves move in the soft wind.
So that was Spring, and Autumn came in the time between, after life changed but before Zeke knew he'd be damned for trying to change it back.
